Christian Leaders without identity!

By Bolaji O. Akinyemi.

One Nigeria is no doubt at the mercy of the timidity of our leaders in the church.

I sat at the breakfast table with one voice not often heard, a voice so loud in the kingdom whenever he chooses to speak. It was at the Bishop Court at Oke Oye, Ilesa. Oke Oye by the way, is the place where God first spoke to the continent through a man not lettered! Ayo Babalola was the voice; lacking of theological understanding more than anything else streamed the Apostolic movement out of mainstream Christian Institutions of his days. The stream soon flowed into two apostolic tributaries; focusing on healing without medicine; The Apostolic Church and Christ Apostolic Church, scores were healed but many more in their thousands died in hope of healing.

Back to the Lord’s table, it was David who spoke about the table set by the Lord before him. Yes! I witnessed one in December of 1991 when I sat at the dinner table with the Colossus Benson Idahosa and ate Dodo and fish stew, that dinner time remains one of the defining moment of my calling. I ate into the ‘cult’ of courage and dipped my bread into the bowl of boldness; a spiritual impartation took place.

At the breakfast table at Oke Oye, sitting to my left at the head of the table was Emeritus Professor Dapo Asaju, the Lord Bishop of Ilesa Diocese and the Bishop Theologian of the Anglican Communion in Nigeria. Opposite me was his cousin brother a principality in Lagos Church Leadership and the Assistant Secretary of Christian Association of Nigeria Lagos State, to my right was Bode Olarinde who accompanied me to the table of destiny like the servant of Saul.

The Bishop reflected on his days at LASU and the leadership of ASUU how he drove to Dordan Barracks in his old Volkswagen Beetle to confront Babangida the then Head of State single handedly. That confrontation birthed the welfare era University Lecturers are enjoying today.

We further reflected on his charge to the immediate past Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osibajo, whom he challenged at the 80th birthday celebration of Pastor Kumuyi, telling him without mincing words that Christians are being killed under the government he was serving and Pastor Kumuyi went into explanation mode.

Our leaders without gut and courage are back on the bloc calling who I don’t know, to join then to petition on the issue of Sharia.

Circulating and trending online for sometime now is an expression I will refer to as cowardice; the docility of Christianity and timidity of Christians. How do you explain; help us sign a petition post flying online. Calling who to help us say no to Sharia in Nigeria?

To whom are we really calling out for help?

Our Muslim neighbours whose understanding of politics is better than ours, who stuck to their gun and got the best deal in 2023.

Where are our leaders who supported Muslim/Muslim ticket?

Every choice has consequences!

To undo what was done against our collective interest and traditional balance of power for justice and equity in 2023, going forward to 2027, get up and get to work. Define your interest away from the mundanity of politics and political trading.

Hold your leaders in the Christian Association of Nigeria accountable. Especially those who used CAN for personal aggrandizement and negotiated our collective interests for their personal political appointments.

Engage with your leaders in the National Assembly.

Educate your traditional rulers who are prostrating for their equals under the guise of religion. Awake in northern Nigeria the consciousness of democracy, free them from the servitude mentality that will rather place the least qualified of the minority tribe over the best of the majority Hausa tribe in the name of religion, politics and otherwise.

Though late, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu saw the need for a Christian presence in his government and backed a Christian with all the baggage hanging on his neck for the position at the National Assembly, for the simple need for a Christian in his government!

The question is; how well has that person and other appointees in this Government served the interest of Christ and his kingdom in this Government?

One Nigeria? Is the question at the Apostolic Round Table 2025.

That question will be better answered by the people and their elected representatives.

A balance ticket for all political parties should be the first step for our consideration in 2027.
