ITF-MSTC: Revolutionizing Technology in Nigeria.

Like every school leavers, my desire was to see myself into the University for which JAMB was the option, with a comfortable scored I was meant to wait for post JAMB in the University of choice for my course but ASUU was on strike, in a bid to circumvent the time wasting culture of our educational system. Dad of course is a player in the Nigeria game, he advised that I should apply for change of Institution to AFIT. The journey to Kaduna for AFIT post JAMB is a story for another day. Till tomorrow, pass or fail my score at AFIT is unknown. I wasn’t admitted either.

If you think Dr Bolaji O. Akinyemi is a man with options, wait until you meet his wife and my mother Joy Osawaru-Akinyemi. Madam option A to E. How ITF-MSTC came on the table is still a mystery am yet to come to term with.

My discovery at ITF-MSTC is mind blowing. In recent years, Nigeria has been making remarkable strides in the technological landscape. As the demand for innovative solutions continues to grow, educational institutions play a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of tech pioneers. The person who have never been out of his father’s farm will conclude there is no farm as big as his father’s.

This is not a PR thing for my Alma, I might have not been to other people farm (ie school), but the testimony of students of other schools at different academic level on Internship programs and other modular programs at my school are humbling an endorsement that ours is the pinnacle of innovation as far as Nigeria is concern. Model after the Singapore’s process of emergence, may ITF-MSTC be the paddle that will send our stranded boat sailing finally.

He will seldom remarks, if parents know what is on offer here; particularly the students mentoring approach of lecturers they will all be here begging for space for their Wards.

Some note worthy project that exemplifies the innovative spirit of MSTC is the development of an XY plotter robot controlled by Arduino, this project was executed by Harrison Gabriel. The XY plotter robot is is an electromechanical device capable of drawing various shapes, patterns, and designs on a two-dimensional surface. It comprises a mechanical structure equipped with motors and actuators to move a pen or drawing tool across the surface in both X and Y directions. The Arduino controlled XY plotter robot offers a versatile and precise solution for creating drawings, designs, and patterns. With its customizable features and ease of use, it finds applications in various fields including art, design, education, and prototyping. As technology continues to advance, the capabilities of such plotter robots are likely to expand, opening up new possibilities for creativity and innovation.

Another project on this list is the Automatic mixing machine, built by Toluwalase Siyanbola. This invention is solely built for mixing dry Agricultural products. This does not mean it cannot be modified for mixing other materials, Imagine having a machine that measures(weighs) according to percentage, feeds into the main mill(mixer) and mixes it with little human intervention!, This is exactly what this project is about. The integration of motors, Arduino microcontrollers, load cell sensors, and servo motors enables precise, efficient, and consistent mixing of dry materials. This automatic mixing machine’s successful results and discussion validate its potential to revolutionize material blending processes.
I believe that this project would mark the beginning of a new chapter of advancing mixing processes through technology in Africa and beyond!

I manufactured a 4-degree-of-freedom (4-DOF) robotic arm driven by Arduino and servo motors, remotely controlled by an Android phone, to carry out similar tasks as the human hand i.e pick and place. This project combines mechanical, electronics, and software to create a versatile robotic arm with four joints akin to the human arm’s flexibility. Arduino’s computational power, coupled with servo motor’s precision, enables intricate and accurate movements. The Android smartphone serves as the control hub, seamlessly connecting to the robotic arm through wired interaction. This synthesis of wired control and mechanical motion exemplifies a more interactive and accessible approach to robotics.

The few mentioned projects are carried out by students in my department(Mechatronics and Automation Technology) there are equally other mind blowing projects carried out by other students in various other departments. These initiatives not only showcases the practical application of technology in addressing societal needs but also underscores the impact that MSTC students are making in driving technological innovation in Nigeria.

The strides made by MSTC in shaping the future of technology in Nigeria are a testament to the institution’s unwavering commitment to fostering a culture of innovation and excellence.
