CP Waheed Ayilara: why now?

Why me, is often the question on the human lips in the face of daunting challenges. The search for answers to this may live with humanity. The flip side when challenges end in sudden death is why now?

The sudden passing of the Akwa-Ibom state’s Commissioner of Police on August 29th has left a gaping void in the hearts of all who knew him. His courageous battle with prostate cancer may have been brief, but his impact on the lives of others will be felt for a lifetime.

He was not heard asking the question why me as he prepared to face his final challenge, his thoughts were not of himself, but of others. He revealed a heart of gold, confessing two debts that weighed heavily on his mind: a promise to support a grieving family with a cow for the Islamic 8day prayer, and a commitment to a lawyer’s journey. Even as he battled with death, Waheed ensured that both debt were paid off, and his promise to both parties kept.
With a deep sense of humility, he sought forgiveness and mercy, reciting the Islamic prayer, “NAFILA,” twice before his surgery.

In a remarkable display of selflessness, he entrusted NASFAT with his final wishes: a simple burial, free from fanfare, and a 3-day Fidau prayer, a testament of his devotion to his faith and his desire to leave the world with the same kindness and compassion with which he lived.

Though his time as Commissioner was fleeting, his legacy will endure. His unwavering dedication to justice, his empathy for the vulnerable, and his unrelenting pursuit of excellence have left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew him.

Family and friends may ask the question why now but this is a path appointed for all mortal and in immortality lies the answer to the question.

For now, farewell, dear Commissioner. Your light may have faded, but its warmth will continue to inspire us to be better, to do better, and to leave the world a little brighter than we found it.
